In an effort to provide students with hands-on learning experiences, second-year Mining Engineering students from the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, recently embarked on an educational tour of the Sonepur Bazari Open Cast Project (OCP) Mines. Led by Prof. Radhakanta Koner, founder of the Rock Slope Engineering Lab, the tour offered valuable insights into the practical aspects and emerging trends of mining operations.
The visit to Sonepur Bazari OCP Mines proved to be immensely beneficial for the students, allowing them to witness firsthand the complexities and challenges of mining in real-world settings. Accompanied by other faculty members of IIT ISM and officials from the Sonepur Mines, the students had the opportunity to explore various facets of mining engineering, from extraction techniques to environmental conservation measures.
Prof. Radhakanta Koner, a renowned expert in rock slope engineering and geotechnical principles, provided expert guidance throughout the tour, enriching the students' understanding of mining practices and safety protocols. His extensive knowledge and practical insights served as valuable learning resources for the aspiring mining engineers.
The tour provided students with a unique opportunity to interact with industry professionals and gain practical knowledge that complements their academic studies. By observing mining operations up close and engaging in discussions with experienced practitioners, the students gained a deeper appreciation for the complexities involved in resource extraction and management.
Furthermore, the collaboration between IIT ISM and Sonepur Bazari OCP Mines highlights the importance of industry-academia partnerships in fostering experiential learning opportunities for students. Such initiatives not only bridge the gap between theory and practice but also equip students with the skills and knowledge required to excel in their future careers in the mining industry.
As the mining sector continues to evolve, educational tours like these play a crucial role in preparing the next generation of mining engineers to tackle emerging challenges and drive innovation in the field. The success of the tour underscores the commitment of IIT ISM to providing holistic education that encompasses both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
